Getting Exact Facts about Poker Hands’ Rankings – Part 1

It is important to know and thoroughly understand poker hands’ rankings as this is crucial when you try to take decisions about which card to hold and which card to discard. Apart from this, by having a clear idea about rankings of poker hands, you will be able to weigh your chances and place bet or fold accordingly.

Straight flush is when 5 cards of same suit are in continuous sequence; ace can be either high (Royal Flush) or low. Example: T♠ J♠ Q♠ K♠ A♠ or A♠ 2♠ 3♠ 4♠ 5♠

Four of a Kind is also known as quads when out of five cards, four are of same rank from different suits. For instance, K♠ K♥ K♦ K♣ Q♠ can win you the pot in most of the probabilities.

Full House or full boat/boat represents hands’ rankings when the 3 cards are of same rank and the other two are of another same rank; K♥ K♦ K♣ Q♠ Q♣ can be termed as “Kings full of Queens”. If community cards or wild cards are used, it is possible for two players to have same set of 3 cards of same rank. In this case, the rank of the other 2 cards is considered for tie breaking.

Getting Exact Facts about Poker Hands’ Rankings – Part 2

Discussed below are few of the other poker hands’ rankings which can decide your fortune of winning the pot.

Flush is when all the five cards of the hand are of same suit but not in sequence. The player with highest rank card wins and the next highest cards are considered for tie breaking. A♥ Q♥ 7♥ 4♥ 2♥ can be read as
Ace-high flush.

Straight – the cards must be in sequence but not necessarily from same suit. For instance, 4♥ 5♣ 6♦ 7♠ 8♥ is Eight-high straight.

“Trips,” “set,” or Three of a Kind represents hand ranking when three out of five cards are of same rank. 2♦ 2♠ 2♥ 7♥ K♣ can be read as “a set of Deuces” or “trip Deuces.”

Two Pair – the player will have two pair of cards, each pair of different rank. For instance, K♥ K♦ Q♦ Q♣ J♦ can be declared as Kings and Queens or Kings Up.

One Pair, as the name indicates, will consist of two cards of same rank. A♦ A♣ K♦ 9♥ 5♠ can be read as Aces or Aces with a King.

High Card is one of the annoyingly common hand rankings; no two cards are of same rank nor are all the cards from same suit. For instance, 4♥ 5♣ 6♦ 7♠ T♥ is Ten High.

Understanding the Mandatory Spending in Online Poker

Online Poker

As discussed before, there are four types of mandatory spending actions associated with poker games and you can find three of them in online poker. Antes value in real money can be anything from 5¢ to $5 while for $5–$10 Stud games the bring-ins will be around $2. In the Stud game, if the decision of the player with lowest face up cards is to only “bring it in” then other players are forced to match the specified $2 bet for staying in hand. Unlike Antes, the money bet in Blinds is not dead and will be considered while calculating the players’ total obligation for staying in. For instance, if the “big” blind posted $2, other players should also put in a minimum of $2. They do not have to put into pot again if there is no raise from the $2 of big blind.

Mandatory Spending – Time

Instead of taking a fixed percentage from every pot for making an income, the card rooms introduced Time as an alternate. This will require each of the players to give certain amount of money to dealers after the prescribed time interval. However, this is not followed in online poker games.

Hold ‘Em Poker – Getting Into Action

First Round in Hold ‘Em Game

After the posting of big blind and small blind, the house will deal two cards to each player which are known as hole cards. It is to be understood that the two players who are immediately on the left of Dealer button would have already put their money into the pot. Thus, the action starts from the player left to the big blind who can call the big blind amount, raise, or fold. The round of betting will continue till it reaches the player who posted the small blind. This person can call, raise, or fold; by folding, the player will forfeit the money already put into pot as small blind.

Advancing the Game

After the action from the small blind, the big blind will have the option to check in the case of no previous raises, raise, or can call any raise. Like all other poker games, betting round will continue till all the players have either called or folded for all the bets. Soon after the completion of betting round, the dealer will start the game by spreading the three face-up flop cards in the middle of the table. After the display of flop cards, all the players will know their chances for winning the pot with their hand.
